If ever you’ve turned the dial to Paul Finebaum’s daily sports talk radio show, the name “Shane from Centerpoint” means something to you.

Whether you gritted your teeth at his outright homer-ism for his beloved Crimson Tide or you pumped your fist as he pridefully hassled national media members who appeared on the show, Shane got a daily rise out of regular listeners.

Finebaum becomes a daily fixture for so many who live and breathe college football in the South, and so do his eccentric cast of callers. Some might say Shane Corn, who died Thursday after a recent battle with lung cancer, was the quintessential Finebaum caller.

Never shy to battle caller rivals and Auburn fans like I-Man and Tammy, Shane also wanted to live out his dream of being a sportswriter, always plugging his work on the blog TideFootball.com. Some of Shane’s finest moments on the air came when he’d discuss a recent column he’d dropped or when he’d passive-aggressively ask Finebaum about getting media credentials for games.

While his fandom couldn’t help but creep into his blogs and calls, Shane had a gift that even some professional sportswriters do not: He could get under the reader and listener’s skin without much effort at all.

A Paul Finebaum Radio Network episode did not feel complete without a visit from Shane, whether he was bragging on the latest Bama win, making excuses for a loss or dropping his latest bomb of a conspiracy theory on college football’s inner workings. Having established himself a perennial show favorite, Finebaum clearly knew to give Shane his due time each day.

And when it was announced on the air that Shane began a struggle that so many people and their families face, his fellow callers — even Auburn folks like I-Man — offered compassion to the man they know made the show what it is, a pulpit for rabid college football fans to give their two cents.

In his last weeks, you can bet Shane dialed into the show to share some thoughts on the season or to talk directly to guests like former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, being allotted enough time to get that sometimes silly point across or as his burning question.

Anyone who listens to this show will miss Shane from Centerpoint, who publicly fought a good fight and inspired his peers to keep calling and keep rattling cages.

ROLL TIDE, WAR EAGLE PREMIERE- Tonight in Birmingham, ESPN Films’ “Roll Tide, War Eagle” will debut at The Alabama Theatre. The film looks at the past two years- on and off the field for Alabama & Auburn which highlights the national titles & Heisman Trophy winners. Also, the rivalry has taken a twisted turn, with a stunning tale of poisoned trees and a historic force of mother nature that brought both sides of this split state together spent days shadowing the show and highlights dozens of callers and that to show the venomous rivalry. “This one-hour film takes you on an unpredictable and unforgettable journey through the history of bad blood that runs between the two programs — all told through the eyes of the school’s Hall of Fame icons, the controversial figures that launched this rivalry into the national spotlight, all the way down to its passionate roots — the fans.” We’ll discuss the film with the Producers today- Joe Tessatore and Bruce Feldman, along with LSU/BAMA preview with Gary Danielson and Greg McElroy.

SEC TO STAY AT 13? The ongoing debate continues whether the Southeastern Conference will pause and continue to stay at 13 teams for the 2012 season. Texas A & M’s President Loftin said in an interview today that he doesn’t “think it’s likely to see another team join SEC and move by July 2012.” Meanwhile, The West Viginia Gazette reported this morning that Nick Saban “has been squarely in the corner of West Virginia, rather than Missouri” and that Vanderbilt prefers Missouri because of “academic reputations”. Today we’ll discuss the potential for another SEC member before next season and preview this weekends bug games. Cecil Hurt… Tony Barnhart… and Gene Stallings will join us this afternoon.

THE SAD SAGA OF HARVEY UPDYKE- In Finebaum’s latest column on SI.com, Paul details the unfortunate situations that have surrounded ‘Al from Dadeville’. Finebaum says, “Let’s learn from Harvey Almorn Updyke Jr.’s mistake and allow this to be a teachable moment… But throwing him in jail will only make some people feel better for a brief moment. I say enough of the attacks and the calls for jail time for vengeance to right the wrong. It is time to get past this human tragedy.” We’ll discuss the latest column and hear from CBS Sports’ Bruce Feldman and former UGA HC Jim Donnan.

NCAA: AU NO MAJOR VIOLATIONS… ENDS NEWTON INVESTIGATION- The NCAA today announced that they did not find any major rules violations in Auburn’s signing of quarterback Cam Newton and has concluded its investigation. The NCAA also concluded its investigation into charges by four former players on HBO who accused the school of providing extra benefits, finding no wrongdoing. The NCAA issued a statement Wednesday saying it interviewed more than 50 people to see if Auburn provided Newton or his family improper benefits. The NCAA said it could not find any reason to keep the investigation open because its findings did not meet a “burden of proof” that Auburn did anything wrong in signing the quarterback who led Auburn to the national title last season. The NCAA said the investigation has to meet a higher standard “than rampant public speculation online and in the media.

GARCIA DISMISSED FROM SC, SPURRIER BOYCOTTS MEDIA MEMBER- A busy day in Columbia, SC today as QB Stephen Garcia was dismissed from the Gamecock football team. Meanwhile, his ol’ ball coach walked out of his weekly media conference over comments written by a local columnist. We’ll update those two situations and discuss the outside possibility of West Virginia becoming a member of the SEC. Longtime West Virginia broadcaster Hoppy Kercheval will join us, as will CBS Sports’ Gary Danielson and former NY Jet Quarterback Greg McElroy.

SEC PRESIDENTS & CHANCELLORS MEET: The Southeastern Conference released a statement Monday concerning the Presidents and Chancellors meeting. “The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference met on Monday for its regularly-scheduled fall meeting. While they discussed a wide range of issues dealing with the changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics, no actions were taken with regards to expansion.” We’ll discuss the ongoing debate of possible SEC Expansion with The NY Times’ Pete Thamel… Tuscaloosa News’ Cecil Hurt… and former AU HC Pat Dye.

There was a time when Paul “Bear” Bryant walked the Vanderbilt sidelines when the Commodores faced off with their traditional rival to the south – Alabama.

In 1940, just weeks after being named head coach at Vanderbilt, Red Sanders lured Bryant away from Tuscaloosa to serve as the Commodores’ offensive and defensive line coach. The Sanders-Bryant combo quickly changed Vanderbilt’s gridiron fortunes. Though the team’s 3-6-1 mark was just a one-game improvement over 1939, the squad finished with two late wins and a near road win at ranked Alabama. The football prospects for 1941 were bright on the Nashville campus.

The ’41 Commodores lived up to expectations. Paced by Bryant’s physical fronts, Vanderbilt started 8-1, including five shutout wins. The final shutout came just before Thanksgiving in Nashville, 7-0, against Bryant’s No. 7-ranked alma mater.

BAMA SEZ NO TO MO- In an article on al.com, sources say “that as of now it appears that a majority of SEC presidents and chancellors would support Missouri’s application.” The sources went on to say “that majority falls just short of the nine votes required to add a new member” and “there’s a group of presidents that wants to sit tight, believing the SEC can do better than Missouri.” Some have indicated that Alabama wants to look at a team from the East and not risk losing its annual game against Tennessee, while Auburn favors adding Missouri and moving to the Eastern Division.
