The Auburn Tigers got their fourth win of the season Saturday when they topped Ole Miss 30-22, and the victory has ESPN’s Paul Finebaum singing head coach Gus Malzahn’s praises.

During Monday’s edition of The Paul Finebaum Show on ESPN Radio, a caller asked Finebaum if he thought Malzahn was capable of returning Auburn to SEC and BCS National Championship levels.

“I most certainly do,” Finebaum answered. “You don’t vote on the seventh of October, but I would probably vote Gus Malzahn Coach of the Year right now in the SEC. That’s today.

“I really like what he’s done because he inherited a mess on the football field and he inherited a mess from a discipline standpoint because of what was left behind by the previous coach.”

With head coach Gene Chizik last season, the Tigers went 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the SEC. The 2013 squad is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the SEC under Malzahn.

“He hasn’t played at (Texas) A&M, at Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, we all know what the schedule looks like,” Finebaum said. “But he’s done a very nice job with the schedule and I don’t think he could have negotiated the first half of the season any better than he has.”
